Kumar Mangalam Birla is the chairman of India’s third largest business house, Aditya Birla Group, with presence in various countries like Canada, Australia, Malaysia and China. Born into generations old business family, Kumar Birla was brought up in a ‘pressure cooker’ environment that always made him conscious about his family name, business and responsibility attached with it. Further, his grandparents convinced and groomed him to succeed in business, and eventually at the age of fifteen, he became involved in family business.
Kumar Birla spent his early life in Mumbai and Calcutta, and is a Chartered Accountant and MBA from London School of Business. His father Aditya Birla, a noted Indian Industrialist always took out special time to spend with him and acted as his business teacher. After the demise of his father, Kumar Birla took over the empire of Aditya Birla Group, at the age of 28. He brought changes in the business strategies and professionalized the entire group by replacing its internal system.
Honored as ‘The Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2005’, Kumar Birla has accelerated the Aditya Birla Group, and has taken it to an altogether high trajectory. The Group now has turnover of $ 35 billion as compared to $2 billion in 1995, the year Birla took over as chairman of the Group. At the age of 22, Kumar got married to 18 years old Neerja Kasliwal, a full time housewife with no business ambitions. He is father of 4 children, and wants his children to come up in life like anybody else, overlooking the advantages they are born with. This eighth youngest billionaire in the world is a shy and modest man, and is an inspiration to budding entrepreneurs across the globe.
